Olive tree

Olive trees (Olea europaea) have established themselves in many temperate climates as well. The large tree with light green to silver coloured leaves look great in any garden or building. It will look great in a container as well as in open ground. Are you looking for a plant that will bring you the pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere to your home or garden? The Olive tree is a fantastic choice for that purpose. The gnarled trunk and full, compact crown of leaves are what turn this tree into an ideal eye-catcher. The olive tree is available in various trunk variations and heights. Order your new tree today at MyPalmShop and enjoy the benefits of having it delivered to your own doorstep.

Characteristics Olea europaea

  • An olive tree has beautiful greyish-green leaves and a light greyish-brown trunk.
  • Olive trees have a luxurious appearance, both indoors and outdoors.
  • The Mediterranean tree loves sun and can withstand a decent amount of frost. With a hardiness somewhere between -7 °C and -10 °C, it will be able to endure most winters at a protected spot. It even prefers freezing temperatures over soaked soil!
  • An olive tree in your home is a real eye-catcher. It is remarkable and provides your interior with an eye-catcher.
  • As they are available in smaller sizes, it will fit in any corner of your home, garden or balcony.
  • They prefer a sunny location so they can produce new, beautiful leaves.
  • The tree can flower in Spring.
  • If winter has been mild and Spring has a few warm days, it will produce beautiful white flowers as precursors to the fruit.

Olive trees outdoors and indoors

The olive tree can be placed both in- and outdoors. Bring the charm of the Mediterranean to your garden or interior with our olive trees. They provide a hint of South-European elegance. Their silvery leaves and remarkable trunk provide you with a timeless, robust appearance to any environment. Enjoy the iconic olives or relax in your garden in your own bit of Mediterranean grandeur.

Caring for the olive tree

Aside from the pleasant appearance of Olea europaea, it is also easy to care for:

  • Pruning is generally not necessary, but it is possible. Olive trees are well suited as a topiary tree. You can keep them in a simple spherical shape. It is also possible to prune it into other shapes. We occasionally offer pom-pom trees as well. Other options are spiral shaped trunks or braided trunks. Aside from trunked olive trees, you can of course also find shrubs without trunks.
  • With sufficient water in well drained soil, the olive tree is happy.
  • Keep the soil lightly humid, especially at a spot with a lot of light.
  • The tree, especially in full sun, can evaporate a lot of water. It is important to water it 2–3 times a week. Ensure the soil is well drained to avoid root rot. Root rot will likely cause the tree to struggle with growth. If the soil is still wet after 4 days, the soil is insufficiently well drained, or you may provide too much water. If the soil is dry after a mere day, you might be giving insufficient water.
  • You can also provide olive tree fertilizer during the growth season, though this is optional. Always read the packaging before applying fertilizer and never exceed the recommended amount of fertilizer provided. Too much fertilizer can hurt the roots.

Repotting your olive tree

As an olive tree does not grow fast, you will not need to repot often. The plant can decorate a terrace or garden without too much effort. This fact contributes to why the olive tree is so popular in temperate Europe. Is it finally time to repot your olive tree? Use a pot that is 20% larger than your current pot. This way, the roots can continue growing properly. The best time to repot is in Spring, so that damaged roots can recover. Use good drainage when putting the olive tree in a new pot. Make sure the new pot has holes, so surplus water can be drained. That way, you reduce the chance for root rot significantly. You can also use clay growing stones at the bottom of the pot.
