Agave

Agave plants are unique succulents native to America. Agaves are particularly well known in Mexico, as they are used for the famous Tequila (and mezcal) drinks. Aside from Mexico, Agaves can also be found in the US, the Caribbean and in some areas of South America. Despite that agaves are not native to Europe, they can commonly be found in many gardens and interiors. Agaves are, for example, very popular plants for botanic gardens. Are you interested in buying an agave? Then you have arrived at the right place. Have a look at our range of plants and pick your preferred agave.

Characteristics of Agave plants

The unique characteristics of agaves make these plants so popular. The leaves of agaves can vary from green to silver. Some have sharp edges or spines, creating the rough and tough appearance of Agave plants. Their appearance is why they can be an eye-catcher in a calm or neutral interior, for example in a rustic interior style. The tough wooden elements and natural colours go well with agaves. Agaves are also popular for industrial interior styles, as they go well together too.

An indoor agave plant is not just beautiful, but also easy. They need very little care and are perfect for anyone who lacks green thumbs. Due to their succulent nature, they store water in their long, fleshy leaves, so they require very little water. They prefer having less water than too much. We recommend not to water before the soil has dried up properly. Agaves also prefer full sunlight. If they are placed in direct sun, they tend to thrive best. Although agaves can sometimes reach impressive sizes in their native habitat, in our European climates their growth tends to be limited. They do not grow much bigger than how you buy them, with some exceptions. Agave americana and related species are clear exceptions to this. Agaves generally look best in a large, grey pot, preferably with proper drainage. Agaves do not need a lot of fertilizer. If you choose to provide fertilizer, we recommend doing so in spring or summer. You can use succulent or cactus fertilizer. Always follow the instructions on the packaging properly.

Agave outdoors

When planting an Agave outdoors, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, choosing the right location is important. When you decide to plant an Agave outside, ensure it is placed in full sun. Agaves grow best in full sun. Aside from growing better, the soil dries faster as well. A humid location is not preferred for an agave, as that may cause root problems. Some agaves are well suited to be kept outside all year. There are large variations in the species; some can withstand up to -20 degrees Celsius. As mentioned, it varies per Agave species, so ensure that if you plant an Agave outside, that you look at its hardiness up front. Agaves less suited to cold can be protected with winter protection, such as climate cloth, or by placing them inside during winter. Generally, Agaves are beautiful and low-maintenance plants that are great additions to both interior and exterior. You do not have to prune agaves, although you can cut away old and wilted leaves at the bottom. Do you have a question about placing an Agave outside? Feel free to contact us. We are happy to advise you!

Repotting and cuttings

As an Agave plant does not grow fast, you do not have to repot it often. If you choose to do so, the best time is in Spring. If you see a small agave growing next to the large one, you can cut it off and repot it. We do recommend waiting for the agave to reach a size of about 8 centimetres before cutting it, so it is strong enough to grow. Simply cut away the small agave and put it in a new pot. It will grow roots and continue growing as a new, separate agave.
