If you are a lover of Japanese gardens, Acers, also known as maple trees, are a must for your garden. In our part of the world Acers are very popular trees, because of their bright and striking leaf colours. Acers come in various shapes and sizes, making them suitable for large as well as small gardens. Most maple specimens have got fine, translucent leaves that look beautiful on their overhanging branches. These shrubs will eventually grow into small trees. Acers produce an abundance of buds in spring and each variety has its own leaf type and colour. In autumn, the leaves of the Acer will start to change colour to a bright red.

Maple trees come in a great variety of colours and styles. One of the maple trees that produce beautiful red leaves in winter is the Japanese maple. This Japanese dwarf maple is particularly suited to smaller gardens. It will not grow higher than 2 metres (6 feet). Another type of maple with striking colours is the Cappadocian maple tree. It originates from the Caucasus and is particularly striking in spring, when its leaves are yellow. Later in summer, the leaves will turn green.
