Jubaea

If you are looking for a palm tree for your garden, you will most likely run into Jubaea chilensis. Although this palm does not originate in Europe, it is becoming more and more common to find one here. It can regularly be found in our gardens. Are you also interested in having your own Jubaea? MyPalmShop has various Jubaea chilensis sizes available. You can sometimes even find rare hybrids.

Origin of Jubaea

Jubaea originates in Chili. You used to be able to find millions of this palm tree all over this South American country, but their numbers have decreased significantly over the past years. You can find about 100.000 specimens left in the wild. How come these palms have decreased in numbers? The English name Chilean wine palm may give it away: the tree is cut in large numbers to produce palm wine. A mature Chilean wine palm can give around 360 litres of juice.

Appearance of the palm tree

There are various characteristics that you can use to recognize a Jubaea. First of all, the size. A mature Jubaea in Chilli can grow up to 25 metres tall. Its trunk is not small either, with a diameter of more than 1,3 metres. The leaves grow from its spear. These leaves have a green colour on top and a silver colour on the bottom. They are very sturdy and thick.

A Jubaea can also be recognizes from the seeds that grow on the palm. These seeds are locally known as coquitos. Coquitos literally means ‘small cococnuts’. The seeds are a delicacy, further adding to the popularity of the palm tree. These coquitos are also the reason why the palm is sometimes known as the coconut palm or Chile cocopalm.

Chilean cocopalm in various sizes

A Chilean cocopalm, though very slow growing, can reach impressive heights. If you are impressed by this stunning palm, you might be looking to buy a Jubaea. In the assortment of MyPalmShop, you can find a variety of sizes. We regularly have smaller sizes of approximately 1 metre, but we often also have palms reach over 3 metres tall. Aside from the size, we also occasionally have double trunked Jubaea palm trees. Very rarely, we even offer special hybrids, such as Jubutia (Jubaea x Butia).
