The large advantage of cacti is that they can be placed both indoors and outdoors. Are you planting your cactus outside? Then you likely do not have to do any maintenance. If you place it inside, however, you may occasionally have to water it. A common mistake is that people forget to water cacti all together. Some cacti need a bit more water, so always look at the specifications when ordering a cactus. That way, you avoid letting your cactus die early.

The difference is not only in the height, but also for example the pot size. As we sell cacti in all shapes and sizes, there’s certainly a suitable one for everyone.

How much light and water do you provide for your cactus?

Most cacti are used to being in full sun. That is why we recommend putting your cactus at a sunny spot. Your cacti will likely grow best if it receives at least 5 hours of direct sun. It will grow best that way. Despite what most people think, cacti can also suffer from sunburn. This does not happen quickly, but if your cactus is too suddenly placed in full sun, it may receive sunburn. Placing a cactus too far away from the sun will cause it to grow less beautiful. It will survive, but look less nice.

A cactus can survive without water for long as they have few stomata through which they lose water. The limited amount of stomata they do have, only open at night to absorb carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. Despite that, it is good for the cactus to occasionally receive water. You can do so once the soil has dried up. Bear in mind, a cactus placed near or above a heater will lose more water and thus need water more regularly. From November until march, cacti need very little water. Ensure that the pot is well drained to avoid root rot.

Outdoor cactus

When choosing an outdoor cactus, keep the local climate in mind. If you want an outdoor cactus, we recommend choosing a hardy species, such as some Echinocereus species. They are used to cold (dry) winters and can survive temperatures below 0. Outdoor cacti need very little maintenance, but need well drained soil to avoid drowning or root rot. Place a cactus at a sunny location, as they feel most at home there.

Letting your cactus flower

Did you know cacti can flower? In order to do so, they should not be spoiled too much in their resting period (November=March). Keep your cactus ina dry, cold area with a temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius. Afterwards, provide regular water in Spring. Your cactus may surprise and reward you by flowering!

Cactus potting soil

Cacti, with their unique characteristics, require specific potting soil. Cactus potting soil is crucial for providing a suitable environment for these succulent plants. Cactus potting soil is specially develop to fulfil the needs of cacti, which prefer dry, well drained soil. Cactus potting soil is well drained soil that reduces water stagnation and the risk for root rot, a common problem for cacti placed in regular soil. Cactus potting soil is usually a mixture of sand, gravel and peat, which creates a good structure for a cactus.
