About Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus shrubs and trees are native to Australia and its surrounding countries. There is a large amount of Eucalyptus species, although few are winter hardy. Eucalyptus trees can be found in Europe, especially around the Mediterranean Sea and along the west coast of England and Scotland. Outside of the warmer areas of Europe, you can often find Eucalyptus gunnii, a winter hardy Eucalyptus, although you can sometimes find non hardy Eucalyptus outside in summer, which are then kept inside during winter.
Attributes of Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus trees are special trees with an impressive growing ability. To keep them smaller, occasional pruning may be neccessary. Fortunately, Eucalyptus trees have a good regenerative ability and thus handle pruning very well. Cut leaves can be used in flower bundles.
Eucalyptus vary quite a bit in trunk and leaf. The leaves are often round or lanceolate and are blue to green of colour. It is quite common for young Eucalyptus trees to have round leaves when young and more lanceolate shaped leaves when they get older. Many species have aromatic leaves - often eucalyptol, though some have a citrus-like fragrance instead. Some Eucalyptus species can be used to product eucalyptus oil.
Taking care of Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus species are very disease- and pest resistant. They prefer a sunny or half sunny spot. Fast growing species require a lot of water, which makes them suited for draining swamps. Eucalyptus trees and shrubs do require proper drainage, as well as nutritious soil. You can use our
palm potting compost for this; it is well drained soil with nutrients.
The hardiness various per species. The most suited species for colder climates is Eucalyptus gunnii. This species can withstand quite some frost. Non hardy species require a frost free spot in winter or need to be protected through the use of
winter protection.
Eucalyptus species
Many Eucalyptus species are not suited for cultivation. Despite that, we have multiple species available that are suited for cultivation. Eucalyptus gunnii is a common part of our assortment. Other species that we have regularly are Eucalyptus parvifolia and Eucalyptus niphophila. Eucalyptus are often offered in shrub form, but ball on trunk is available at times as well.
