Chamaerops, also known as the European dwarf palm or dwarf fan palm, is a well suited palm tree for any garden. It is one of the hardiest palm trees available and thus very popular, even in colder places such as northern Europe. It is one of the two palms who originate in Europe – in the Mediterranean. Various species of Chamaerops
Chamaerops is subdivided into three well known cultivars. These may initially look very similar, but the three have their own distinctive features. They each have their own characteristics.
- - Chamaerops humilis: Chamaerops humilis originates in Europe and grows around the Mediterranean. The palmate leaves have a green colour and grow quite close together. This gives the Chamaerops humilis its fairly compact look. This means that the palm is well suited, not only as a garden plant, but as a container plant or at a balcony as well.
- - Chamaerops humilis Cerifera: At first, Chamaerops humilis Cerifera looks a lot like the Chamaerops humilis mentioned above. They have a similar maintenance and their hardiness is almost the same (though Cerifera can withstand slightly less). However, there are some differences between these palms. The leaves of Chamaerops humilis Cerifera are much more blue of colour and the petioles have more spines as well. Cerifera can also both be used as a garden plant or as a container plant and thus are very versatile in use. Their native habitat is the Atlas mountains in northwest Africa, where they are used to significant droughts.
- - Chamaerops humilis Vulcano: Chamaerops humilis Vulcano is another hardy dwarf fan palm. It will grow well in both open ground as well as in a pot. Chamaerops humilis Vulcano remains even more compact, despite making a lot of leaves. Its compactness makes it suitable for terraces or balconies as well. Its leaves are dark green on top but more silvery at the bottom; a fantastic addition to any garden as a whole. Chamaerops humilis Vulcano produces more leaves at the cost of trunk growth. This creates a voluminous whole. The name Vulcano reveals its origin – Vulcano is a small island near Sicily.
Why should you buy a European dwarf palm?
Compared to many other palm species, this palm does not grow very large. That can be a big advantage. A palm tree of over 10 metres tall is amazing when you are on holiday, but it might be less practical in your garden. In addition, Chamaerops palm trees can grow and root well in European climates, contrary to many other palms. It can also resist the winters we have here. Temperatures down to -10 degrees are not a problem. It is recommended to protect the palm against excessive water in winters with a lot of rain or frequent frosts or snowfall. Protect the spear (growing point) of your palm, for example by creating a sort of umbrella, by placing the palm underneath a roof or by using water protection. It can resist harsh sunlight (it even loves direct sunlight) but dislikes humidity. Chamaerops palms require at least five hours of direct sunlight and regular watering outside of winter (although it is resistant against droughts). As mentioned before, Chamaerops prefer getting a lot of direct sunlight. The more direct sunlight it receives, the better it grows. It also produces a thin wax layer to protect it against the sun. This wax layer makes the palm look silvery-blue. Rain may temporarily remove this wax layer. All things considered, Chamaerops palms are ideal fan palms to plant in open ground.
