Arbutus unedo - Stawberry tree
This plant almost always grows as a large shrub and can reach a height of around 4 metres in the wild. The Arbutus unedo bears deep-red, round fruits after first producing beautiful, bell-shaped white flowers. These flowers hang in clusters on the shrubs. The fruits are slightly tart and are used in Italy and Spain to make wines and liqueurs. What makes this tree special is that it starts flowering in autumn and keeps flowering throughout the winter. So this tree is at its most beautiful precisely when other plants have finished flowering!! Larger specimens can withstand temperatures of -12/-14 °C. Smaller specimens and potted specimens should be protected in winter. Please also see our winter protection.
