The Phoenix Sylvestris is very similar to the Phoenix dactylifera. This silver date palm has a single robust stem, with interesting diamond-shaped patterns which develop from leaf scars. This palm requires some maintenance, including pruning old dead leaves. This activity creates the well known 'skirt' of leaves. The strain has a bulge at the base. The large pinnate, feathery leaves grow from the top of the stem. The leaves are silver or blue-green in color, slightly bent, with sharp points. The leaf sheaths are armed with long spines.
