Metrosideros excelsa - Iron tree
In Europe, this plant bears striking, beautiful red flowers from early spring until the end of July. The flowers appear to consist entirely of stamens. This ironwood tree has grey-green, felty, hairy leaves. Do not give too much water and ensure good drainage. This plant prefers slightly acidic soil. Pruning is best done after flowering. Once visible buds have formed, only give a weak solution of liquid fertiliser monthly, as plants from the Myrtaceae family are prone to burning when too many salts build up in the soil. Stop giving liquid fertiliser once the plant has finished flowering.
