Brahea edulis
Beautiful, fast-growing palm
Brahea edulis (Guadalupe palm) is an excellent palm and is reasonably frost resistant! It occurs in natural habitat on steep rocky slopes of the North end of Guadalupe Island, off the west coast of Mexico, and grows to about 10m (30 feet) tall. It is the only Brahea not to have persistent dead leaves. Furthermore, it dislikes high humidity.
This palm is proving quite successful in our warmer winters, with some UK specimens having reached trunking size over 10 years. Good-sized, established plants have been known to survive -6°C and to recover from even lower temperatures! This is generally considered to be the fastest-growing Brahea, and once established its greater size seems to increase its resistance to cold.
