This palm originates from Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, where it grows in open forest. It is a medium-sized fan palm, with an unusual woven fibre wrapping the trunk, and long, thin spines on the leaf bases. Leaves are greyish green. 

It likes full sun, and to be planted in slightly alkaline soil. Trithrinax acanthocoma is a very hardy, if slow growing palm, and is drought and cold tolerant.
