Fargesia and sustainability: how this bamboo can contribute to a sustainable lifestyle

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on our planet and thus popular for a wide variety of applications. It is known for its frost-tolerance, making it a suitable plant for moderate climates of Western Europe. In this blog, we would like to explain why Fargesia can contribute to a sustainable lifestyle. In addition, we also explain some of the different species and how to buy these.

This is Fargesia

Fargesia is a genus of clumping (non-invasive) bamboo, which means it does not spread a lot and thus a safe option for gardeners that are afraid of uncontrollable bamboo growth. Fargesia grows upright with sturdy shoots that reach 2-4 metres into the sky, depending on the species. Fargesia bamboos are ideal plants for those who want a sustainable and easily maintained plant.

Fargesia species

There are various Fargesia species available, each with their own characteristics and appearance. Below, you can find a list of some of the most popular species:

  • Fargesia murielae: this species has elegant, hanging shoots and is well suited for a hedge to create privacy.
  • Fargesia nitida: this species has larger shoots than most other Fargesia species and is more commonly used as a solitary eye-catcher.
  • Fargesia robusta: this species has thick shoots of up to 4 metres tall and often used for hedges as well.

Planting Fargesia bamboo

Planting a Fargesia bamboo is easy and can be done by gardeners of any level. Below, you can find the steps to help you on your way:

  1. Find a suitable spot: some fargesia species require more sunlight to grow, others prefer a spot in the shade.
  2. Prepare the soil: Fargesia requires a well drained soil. They grow best if they are nutrient-rich, though can easily grow in poor soils (especially if you manually fertilize). Dig a hole that is approximately twice as wide as the root ball and mix in some organic fertilizer before planting your bamboo.
  3. Plant your Fargesia: Place the plant in the hole and fill the area around the root ball with more soil. Press the soil to securely fasten the plant in its new spot.
  4. Provide water: give your new addition sufficient water and keep the soil humid.
  5. The first winter: During the first winter, your bamboo may lose up to a third of its leaves. This is normal and not a cause for worry. Fallen leaves can be used as a mulch layer; it protects the soil against frost, so that the bamboo ‘awakens’ earlier in Spring.
