Opuntia rufida is a cactus that can reach up to 1,5 metres tall in its original habitat of the Mexican states Chihuahua and Coahuila. The round, grayish green elaves can reach up to 20 cm long and generally become equally wide. The cactus also flowers around the end of Spring with gorgeous yellow flowers. These flowers turn orange or red later on. Opuntia rufida requires a lot of sun but has little other needs. It is a great addition to any interior. Opuntia rufida does not have any spines. Instead, it has glochidia - small barbed hooks - on the discs. Wear protection when handling the cactus, as these glochidia can sting. Rufida's distinct red colour comes from these glochidia.
Well suited to combine with Opuntia microdasys - which has yellow glochidia.
