The well known and much-purchased Opuntia ficus-indica prickly pear cactus is now also available without prickles! The Opuntia can branch out to a maximum height of 2 meters (6 feet). The beautifully shaped wide oval discs are about 40-50cm (1-2 feet) long and can be as wide as 20cm (8"). The fruit of this prickly pear are green-yellow in colour and later turn orange to red. You can eat the fruit by cutting it in half and then spooning it out. There are small seeds in the flesh, but you can eat them too, rather as you would those of a kiwi. You can also cook the disks and eat as a vegetable.
But this beauty is known to be a beloved houseplant that makes you happy with its flowers!
