The black walnut tree is an attractive large tree with interesting fruit. The
scaly bark of Juglans nigra is light to dark brown, depending on its age. The
leaves are dark green of colour and have a serrated edge. Furthermore,
the base of the leaves are round, and become pointed towards the
end of the leaf. Hairs are common on the underside of the leaves.
Black walnuts can be eaten. They ripen in autumn and are very tasty. These
walnuts are healthy as well! The walnut shell is black, which gives the tree
its name. They can be used in cakes, cookies and various other baked treats.
Last but not least, the tree can also provide a sap in spring that can be drunk
or worked into syrup or sugar.
The tree has many uses. For example, it can be used for its wood or for
making dyes and abrasive.
