Chimonanthus praecox is also known as Japanese all spice or as wintersweet. It is a shrub that requires some patience as its flowers usually appear after at least 5 years. Despite its somewhat slow growth, it is a perfect addition for your garden. The name wintersweet may reveal two aspects: it flowers in winter and during its flowering, a pleasant, sweet aroma is spread around your garden. Wintersweet has remarkable flowers as well. The outer layer is bright yellow with a reddish-brown core, creating contrast and making this plant a real eye catcher. Wintersweet grows up to 4 metres tall with lanceolate leaves of 5-30 cm long. Chimonanthus praecox grows best at a sheltered location, despite being hardy. All in all a great plant with a long life expectancy in our climates.
