Other Trachycarpus species

Are you looking for palm trees for your garden? A Trachycarpus is an excellent option. These palms are real eye catchers for your home. They are often called hemp palms and are known for the many impressive specimens. They generally have a robust and tough appearance. MyPalmShop offers various different varieties of these popular palm trees. Plenty of reasons to take a look at our full range.

Origin of Trachycarpus

Trachycarpus mainly originate in China, India and south-eastern Asia; though it can nowadays be found in Europe aplenty as well. Quite a few were imported to Europe about 150 years ago, although some, such as Trachycarpus princeps, have been ‘rediscovered’ around the nineties. Trachycarpus palm trees can commonly be found in parks and gardens, as their appearance makes them popular. The rough, fibrous trunk and fan shaped leaves appeal to many people. Besides, there are a few species of Trachycarpus that are very hardy.

Taking care of Trachycarpus

Trachycarpus palm trees prefer a spot with a lot of sun. They grow well in full sun, but generally dislike hard winds. Although it does not get damaged from wind, the leaves may look messier. That’s why Trachycarpus palms are best placed in a sheltered location, such as close to a wall or fence. Trachycarpus wagnerianus is an exception – they have stiff leaves that can resist hard winds.

Trachycarpus palms placed outside prefer a slightly humid ground. This ensures that the palm has sufficient water. Do not keep the soil wet – that might cause root rot. Use well drained soil to prevent surpluses of water around the roots. Indoor plants can often be kept a bit more wet was the air humidity is a lot lower than outside. The palm can also have more water in summer compared to winter. Each palm in every different situation requires a different amount of water. We recommend starting with smaller amounts of water and checking the humidity of the soil daily to see if you are given too much or too little or exactly enough. You can do so by digging into the soil for about 5 cm with your fingers. If the soil dries up very quickly, you can provide a bit more water. If the soil is still wet after a few days, we recommend providing less water. After a bit of trial and error, you will get a feeling for the palm’s thirst.

Winter hardy palm trees

Aside from their appearance, there are other reasons to buy Trachycarpus palm trees. Most of them are very hardy palm trees. They can withstand temperatures up to -17 degrees. Should temperatures drop below -17 degrees, you will have to apply some protection. You can use special winter protection for palm trees or place the palm in a sheltered location, such as in a shed. Trachycarpus palms are known for their incredible hardiness. There are regular stories about Trachycarpus palms which survived even -20 degrees C. This is why they are commonly found in colder climate gardens, such as in northern Europe. It can be used to create a tropical appearance but with a hardy character and beautiful evergreen leaves. Most Trachycarpus species grow better in moderate climates than tropical climates.
