The growth and fruits of the papaya bring an exotic touch to your garden. It comes from Ecuador and was cultivated there long before the arrival of the Europeans. Subsequently, the papaya was also cultivated in New Zealand, Israel and the Americas.
Carica papaya grows relatively quickly, has large leaves and large, five-edged fruits. These are first dark green, but mature very quickly to the yellow fruit. The ripe fruits should be harvested quickly as branched plants otherwise have problems bearing the heavy fruits (which can weigh up to 600g (1lb) each!). It is, therefore, advisable to first cultivate a single trunk. It is then possible to get between 5 and 10 fruits on one plant. The fruits are eaten raw or can be used to make chutney or curry.
