Opuntia microdasys, also known as the 'bunny ears' cactus due to its flat discs with dense growth of glochidia. A very characteristic cactus originating in Mexico. European climates are generally too cold, but Opuntia is well suited as an interior plant. They can grow up to 1 metre tall with discs growing from 7-15 cm long. Beautiful yellow flowers appear in summer, giving the cactus a very cheerful look. Opuntia cacti are well suited for pruning - just make sure to wear protection when cutting off discs.
Opuntia rufida is a cactus that can reach up to 1,5 metres tall in its original habitat of the Mexican states Chihuahua and Coahuila. The round, grayish green elaves can reach up to 20 cm long and generally become equally wide. The cactus also flowers around the end of Spring with gorgeous yellow flowers. These flowers turn orange or red later on. Opuntia rufida requires a lot of sun but has little other needs. It is a great addition to any interior. Opuntia rufida does not have any spines. Instead, it has glochidia - small barbed hooks - on the discs. Wear protection when handling the cactus, as these glochidia can sting. Rufida's distinct red colour comes from these glochidia.
