Butia eriospatha - Woolly butia
This is the fastest growing and hardiest Butia, and a great choice for Northern European gardens, as it is undoubtedly the best suited to our cool and wet climates. One of the most beautiful feather palms, it is very frost resistant; good size palms can reasonably survive temperatures of -12C. Plants which have survived even lower temperatures with apparent damage, recover well eventually. However, we still recommend adequate winter protection!
The Butia eriospatha is native to areas of Southern Brazil at elevations of 1000 m above sea level where it is much colder and wetter in winter than the rest of Brazil, and even in summer temperatures can often be similar to those seen in Northern Europe. It is named after the brown fuzzy tomentum covering the flower spathe. Trees can reach 6m high in the wild, and almost certainly more in cultivation, and can be found growing both in the wild and in cultivation throughout all of the mountainous area of South Brazil where it is valued for its sweet and delicious fruits
